Live a Little

I'm just going to say it: Decadence is underrated.

Yes, I know that sometimes simple things are the best -- but other times, a little extravagance is exactly what's needed.

No one ever says, "Okay, I'll only eat one chocolate-covered gummy bear, because that's plenty." or "Please, no more vintage champagne for me!" or "Thanks, but I will politely turn down your offer to spend the entire day shoe shopping with Brad Pitt, er I mean, Chris."

At least I don't...or wouldn't. (Wink.)

I know a lot of people save their splurges for special occasions, which is great, but Chris and I make a point to treat ourselves whenever and wherever we can. It doesn't have to be someone's birthday or an anniversary to do something out of the ordinary. And that something out of the ordinary doesn't have to be all fireworks and fanfare. Just open a bottle of bubbly on a Tuesday night because you're home early for once, or make reservations for next Wednesday to try that new restaurant in town, just because. Every day we wake up breathing is a day to celebrate as far as I'm concerned. So get to it.

The same rules apply in the kitchen. I was going to make a boring-yet-satisfying vegetable calzone, but then I decided to go all out. I made a wheat crust pizza topped with smoked ricotta from Salvatore Bklyn (so rich and creamy), local organic greens, crispy bacon, a drizzle of white truffle oil, and a pinch each of smoked sea salt and cracked pepper. It's a perfect example of delicious self-indulgence on a weeknight. (And we enjoyed every single gooey bite with gusto.)

Because, well, why not?
Give me the luxuries of life and I will willingly do without the necessities.

So go ahead, live a little. It's Thursday.
